Since 2012, National University of Singapore engaged PLUS to create a brand and undertake the organisation of Vertical Cities Asia, an annual international design competition and the symposium. Ten top universities from Europe, North America and Asia are invited to participate and to present design ideas and thoughts that address the challenges of rapidly urbanizing Asia besieged by massive rural to urban migrations.
Research Summary, Analysis and Proposed Framework
The competition was focused on worldwide urban issues, each year a site in different countries is chosen as the area of study under a particular theme. Between 2012 – 2015, the themes ranged from air quality, to mobility, to food resilience, etc. The common element between each year is the context of consideration of 1 square kilometre. Our understanding of the structure led us to create an identity adapting from the existing graphics (initial graphics and posters not by PLUS) that mirrors the element where the base context is the same, yet with different highlights each year.
Colour was used as the key differentiator each year while the base of the graphics remains the same. This was effective as an announcement of the upcoming edition, when the colours were splashed over key areas within NUS through the publicity materials. Atop the same base, different representing symbols were chosen for the year, expressing the theme in a very simple and indicative manner.
