// Art Installation
The Substation 1:1 is a site specific art installation created for (interiorities)(peripheries, an initiative by The Substation. In contrary to gallery art, the programme features art that “just is”. We were invited to inhabit The Substation for a period of time with an art work. The brief was open and flexible and simply calls for the artwork to be created for the space of The Substation.
Research Summary, Analysis and Proposed Framework
The Substation was an adaptable space, flexible to accommodate art of various forms, however, that flexibility also played down The Substation as a space as it took on many changing forms of art across the years. The spaces of The Substation was rendered into the background, seen more as a transit area to the art spaces of the black box and the gallery. We wanted to use the artwork to balance out the perspectives and pay homage to the physical home of The Substation community.
Creating something close to our hearts, from the basis of our design education in architecture and industrial design, we wanted to give a sense of scale and a sense of space to The Substation. We decided to bring out the innate governing principles of space as a conversation to The Substation through the dimensioning of the space. We intended for people to engage with the space in an acute manner, knowing the proportions of their attachment or impression of space in tangible numbers. Realising a different form of spatial engagement, experience and heighten their understanding of the space they inhibit, they find out things they never knew existed in the space familiar to them. It became personal when The staff of the Substation commented that the artwork gave them a sense of dimension to the space as they are now able to share with movers the sizing of objects to move into the space.
